Il Cardo Cooperativa Sociale Onlus – Engaging communities to safeguard the Alpine ecosystem

An Alpine valley is fragile ecosystem protected by guardians who hold deep knowledge about ecological harmony. This project brings together the Camonica Valley in Lombardy – represented by Il Cardo – and the Contemporary Textile Hub Kreativnice Škofja Loka in the Gorenjska Region to bridge traditional practices with modern design, fostering community empowerment and engagement for a fair transition.

The collaboration focuses on connecting UNESCO-recognised traditions like transhumance and traditional crafts with contemporary design, aiming to empower communities and promote citizen involvement in sustainable transitions. The Slovenian partners will actively participate in community-based transhumance events in Camonica Valley, emphasizing lessons in transition and highlighting the vital roles of shepherds and craftspeople in maintaining the Alpine ecosystem’s balance. These events also aim to attract new audiences through participatory art activities.

Škofja Loka’s textile artisans will create large-scale installations showcasing environmental preservation, while both partner organizations will hold collaborative workshops to co-design community projects in Škofja Loka. These efforts will include peer-to-peer meetings and active involvement in community activities to refine methodologies and enhance community engagement.
