This second podcast series gives insight into the curatorial concept and production process of Liquid Becomings: the 2024 edition of The European Pavilion. Choreographing an artistic flow across four European rivers, Liquid Becomings is a travelling pavilion that takes the form of four boats sailing on four European rivers, before coming together in Lisbon for a final artistic programme in November 2024. Featuring interviews with the curators and partners involved, the podcast series also reflect on what the Liquid Becomings journey and themes mean to Europe.

Episode 1: Liquid Becomings (Begins)
In this first episode with Donald Hyslop + Resonance FM, and as they launch the project in Belgrade on 29n June, the curators behind Liquid Becomings share more about the concept of their travelling pavilion that will go out to Europe’s diverse communities by sailing on four European rivers later in the summer. Drawing on the symbolic richness of water while underlining the urgencies it also conveys, and emphasising the fluidity of European identity itself, Liquid Becomings brings an unexpected and innovative perspective to the debate on Europe.
Episode 2
Donald Hyslop at Resonance FM is supporting the Liquid Becomings: the European Pavilion 2024 project with a series of programmes following the participants as they traverse the rivers of Europe. In this episode we hear from artists and curators Laura Kaulaz, Maria Magdalena Kozlowska and Olga Uzikaeva. They discuss their backgrounds, how they became involved in Liquid Becomings and some of the opportunities and challenges they face as they prepare for their journeys this summer and autumn.

Episode 3: Of Boats and Borders

The episode features in conversation with Ewa Ciepielewska, Rainer Prohaska and Hanna Priemetzhofer, venturing into their background, the rich heritage and tradition which inspire their works, and it is a fascinating glimpse into the unique vessels, the boats MS Fusion and FLOW, which form the core of Liquid Becomings. This podcast series is a production of Resonance FM being developed by Donald Hyslop.
Episode 4: The European Cultural Foundation

The European Pavilion competition and financial support is provided by the European Cultural Foundation. Based in Amsterdam, it is a small but important force in the European cultural sector. In this episode Donald Hyslop talks with ECF Director André Wilkens.
Episode 5: Old and New Public Spaces

This week, we’ll be hearing from two leading thinkers as they explore different but linked issues and challenges around public space.
Marleen Stikker is one of the founders and Director of DE WAAG in Amsterdam. DE WAAG future lab reinforces critical reflection on technology, develops technological and social design skills, and encourages social innovation. Marlene also founded the Digitale Stad (Digital City) in 1993 – the first virtual community introducing free public access to the Internet in Amsterdam. She leads a transdisciplinary team of designers, artists, and scientists, utilising public research and key enabling methodologies to empower people to participate in the collective design of open, fair and inclusive futures. Miguel Figueira is an award-winning architect who studied at the University of Porto’s faculty of architecture. He was responsible for the local technical office in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal (1997-2001) and for the urban design of the municipality until 2014. Miguel is the founding member of civic movement SOS Cabedelo, which advocates for the recognition of the sea and waves in territorial planning and coastal protection policies. A keen surfer and activist, his work and advocacy for oceans as public spaces is internationally recognised. He is also the author of book O Mar E a Nossa Terra. His participation on the podcast is an extract from a longer interview that will be broadcast in full.
