‘The European Pavilion 2024: Liquid Becomings’ to set sail

19 Aug 2024

Setting Sail
On 27 August in Baja, Hungary the first of four artistic crews participating in The European Pavilion 2024: Liquid Becomings will set sail on the Danube. This marks the start of four journeys on four European rivers – the Danube, the Vistula, the Rhine, and the Tagus – crossing 11 countries and travelling a combined distance of 1.394 kilometers in which 37 independent artists and curators participate. Each crew will follow its own itinerary and will be committed to imagining alternative modes of togetherness, and exploring ways of creating a future for Europe that is better, fairer, regenerative: just and abundant for all. The Danube will be followed by the Vistula (from 30 August), the Rhine (from 17 September) and finally the Tagus (from 18 October). After the sails, the artistic crews will come together in Lisbon for a three-day festival on 7-9 November 2024 in which all the materials that have been created and collected during the journeys (notes, drawings, ephemeral actions, films and sounds) will be presented.

(Re)imagining the future of Europe
During the collective residencies on the boats, the artistic crews will engage with the landscape and the people that the floating pavilion meets on each journey. The artistic programmes along the four rivers will include pre scheduled events and stops, varying from community meals, presentations, meetings with activist groups related to rivers, visiting sites to open talks. In this radical artist-developed and artist-led experiment, artists, intellectuals, experts and citizens will commit themselves to imagining alternative modes of togetherness. By listening to the stories of ordinary Europeans outside the usual centers, among others, Liquid Becomings wants to contribute to redefining the future of Europe.
