Glacial Conversations: Culture, Climate and Resistance in Utrecht

13 May 2025

On 19 May, Casco Art Institute in Utrecht will host Glacial Conversations, a public event that brings together artists, community leaders, and researchers to discuss climate breakdown, extractive industries, and the loss of Indigenous knowledge.

The programme was created by artist Teresa Borasino as part of the exhibition Sensing the Ways. It includes a live performance, conversations with Indigenous organisers from the Andes, a lecture on colonialism and capitalism, and a shared meal. It’s built around Teresa’s long-term research on the Quelccaya glacier in Peru, which is disappearing due to climate change and being targeted for lithium mining.

What’s happening to Quelccaya reflects a broader pattern: ecosystems and communities are being treated as expendable so others can profit. But this programme is also about resistance. It creates space for different ways of thinking, learning, and connecting—ways that are often left out of mainstream European debates.

The European Cultural Foundation supports Glacial Conversations through our Culture of Solidarity Fund. We back projects like this because they bring people together across borders to imagine fairer, more sustainable futures, especially in the face of global challenges like climate injustice.

If you care about climate, justice, or how culture can be used to build understanding between different communities, this event is worth your time.
