Towards a More Free and Independent European Media Landscape

13 Aug 2025

Display Europe, the pan-European news platform co-funded by the EU and initiated by the European Cultural Foundation, has reached a major milestone. After its initial development phase, the team has built a fully functioning version of its platform—designed to rethink how independent journalism can be discovered, read, and sustained across Europe. Display Europe already connects journalism from hundreds of media outlets, helping them grow their audiences through AI-powered translation into 21 languages.

What Display Europe Offers

Display Europe is a cooperative that brings together independent and community-driven media from across Europe. Its multilingual distribution tools allow news outlets to reach new audiences without losing editorial or commercial control.

For readers, this means easier access to quality news in their own language. For media partners, it means their stories can reach more people—directly on their own websites—thanks to an innovative overlay that displays translations without requiring visitors to leave the page.

Display Europe wants to provide an alternative to corporate tech platforms and the black box algorithms that shape what news people see. Instead, it offers a system that serves both the public and the media outlets themselves, supporting long-term sustainability.

Because it is run as a cooperative, participating media organisations also have a stake in the technology they use—helping them boost both their journalistic impact and their business efficiency.

Join a Growing Movement

The Display Europe cooperative works to “break the big-tech spell” in European journalism. This year, the Display Europe community has grown to include over 300 journalists and publications, with 60 outlets actively sharing their work through the platform. For these organisations, Display Europe offers an appealing way to reach new readers without having to compete with or depend on big-tech distribution rules.

In May and June 2025, the site averaged 4,500 daily return visits —a strong sign that many visitors liked what they found.

Recent additions include Kapitál Noviny, Transitions, New Eastern Europe, Green Report, Volksverpetzer, Pravda Association, Green European Journal, Denik Alarm, Reset! Network, and Gerador—joining founding members as Voxeurop, Eurozine, Krytyka Polityczna, The Schuman Show, Public Spaces, Hostwriter, Cultural Broadcasting Archive and Community Media Forum Europe.

Visitors can also enjoy content from consortium partners, including the Standard Time talk show, Data Morgana, press reviews from Voxeurop, The Schuman Show, and the Display City Sessions podcast.

The team is now developing new features, refining the brand, and reaching out to new audiences both online and in person.

Display Europe welcomes new outlets, journalists, and readers to join them in their mission to reclaim digital public space for European journalism. For independent news deserves European-built technology that matches its democratic mission.
