You Can’t Close a Circle by Arts Catalyst

1 Nov 2023

You Can’t Close a Circle (June-Sept 2024) is an art project that fosters connections between workers, e-waste, and global supply chains, to reimagine worker identities and solidarity for a just transition.

Through digital and shared space activities, and a closing public event, Arts Catalyst and independent curator and researcher Dani Admiss bring together diverse publics and art, waste and oil workers from European and South Asian backgrounds and localities, who are all connected through global e-waste recovery systems, to share their context-specific experiences and coproduce worker protection ideas and tools.

You Can’t Close a Circle will deliver: Ten capacity-building workshops in Bangalore with informal waste workers by Design Beku: Four online/shared space learning sessions hosted by participants blended from across four distinct European, neighbouring and South Asian cultural regions Aberdeen, Sheffield, Helsinki, and Bangalore: Commission three worker protection tools, as well as action steps uploaded to an online hub: One ground-breaking two-day hybrid public event in Sheffield.

You Can’t Close a Circle has been established to further just transition by using culture to raise awareness of how social and environmental injustices relating to e-waste fuels climate breakdown, and build common ground and foster community-led dialogue between EU/UK/IN workers, who are unequally situated in diverse areas and global supply chains.
