A Global South Perspective on Power, Europe and Equality

11 Feb 2026

In the latest episode of Handing Over the Mic, Mexican human rights lawyer and ProDESC Executive Director Alejandra Ancheita shares a perspective shaped by years of working with workers, Indigenous and rural communities facing structural inequality and corporate power. Her message is clear: real change comes from transforming the rules that shape economic and political relationships, not simply adapting to them.

Reflecting on the relationship between Europe and Latin America, Ancheita offers a view that holds two realities at once. Europe carries the weight of its colonial legacy. It is also the place where many democratic struggles and human rights frameworks were developed. These tools, she argues, can be reclaimed and reshaped to confront today’s forms of economic domination and cultural extraction.

The conversation explores collective power, feminist leadership and the growing need to rethink how global relationships are built. At its core is a simple challenge: move from unequal exchange to partnerships based on rights, responsibility and equality.

Handing Over the Mic brings influential voices from the Global South into Europe’s public conversation. Published by the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics and produced with the support of the European Cultural Foundation, the series invites Europe to listen, reflect and rethink its role in a changing world.
