2019 ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture Press Material

The laureates of the 2019 ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture are Ahdaf Soueif (Cairo/London) & City of Women (Ljubljana).

Writer and activist Ahdaf Soueif is a fierce opponent of authoritarianism and colonialism. Her novels, essays and reportage articulate what it means to be a citizen in a diversified world. Reporting from the 2011 Egyptian revolution, she communicated the shared dreams of the Arab Spring and inspired a new generation to tackle social and political issues through culture. She is the founding chair of the Palestine Festival of Literature. Bridging the supposed gap between east and west, Soueif creates common ground for a more democratic future.

Every year since 1994 in Ljubljana, City of Women brings together artists, thinkers and activists from all over the world who fight for greater gender and social equity. They highlight artists who blur the boundaries of genre. their inclusive understanding of contemporary feminism expands the horizon of the struggle against gender-based oppression. City of Women makes connections across generations and social positions.

The 11th ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture will be presented on 2 October 2019 in the Meervaart Theatre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in front of a large international audience. The laureates each receive a prize of EUR 25,000.
